It may seem silly to lose your home due to an addiction to Internet pornography. But successful people know how these things work. You might sacrifice an important meeting to rearrange your schedule so that you can access porn that day. Or, you might be putting off an important phone or bank call that you need to make, because you want to stay online a little longer while you search for new porn – and then the person you want to contact may be gone by the time you get around to calling. Maybe you can’t call the next day, then maybe the person is out the next day, and then all of a sudden you’re looking at an entire week that goes by. These things happen, and they happen in very small gaffes and indiscretions. But then they add up to the distractions in your life.

So, suppose your job is not as secure as it used to be and therefore your ability to pay off your mortgage is probably risky, and furthermore, you would like to log onto porn sites whenever you can for 1, 2, or even 3 hours per session. The porn habit basically pushes you toward failure, even while it may help you feel better day by day, hour to hour (as all addictions do). So how do you stop it and make amends before it’s too late?

First, don’t try to stop masturbating cold turkey on the internet. This is a waste of time. You start small, and expect many setbacks. Quickly assess how much time you are currently wasting on the Internet. An hour or two online each day might seem pretty reasonable, and chances are you can still work in most parts of the world. But think about it: Even just one hour a day, five days a week is at least 5 hours a week, or about 20 hours a month. That’s half a work week every month you spend staring at pixels on your screen, eroding your self-esteem, when you could be applying those 20 hours to build your self-esteem and improve your standing in the world. Over the course of a year, you add that 20 hours a week to at least 240 hours a year. Six full working weeks of time, wasted, dumped. That’s six whole weeks that you spent holding yourself back, instead of building yourself up. At the very least, you could have spent that time doing some kind of permanent recreation like taking a vacation, taking a class, even writing a book or going out and meeting real people.

Make a list of the things you would like to do instead of going online to watch porn. Plug that wish list into the time you’re wasting online (say, our six weeks out of the year). Then, day in and day out, work on avoiding masturbation instead of working on arranging opportunities to masturbate. Put yourself in situations where you have to be somewhere when you know you will have access to a porn ready computer. Go out and see people. Get involved in groups that volunteer, play sports, fish, do art, or do whatever you’re interested in. Make sure to go out and see others. When you slip up, you slip up. Drop it and move on to the next day. As you replace the harmful behavior of masturbating for hours online with the strengthening behavior of interacting with people and pursuing things that make you truly happy and stronger, the urge to go online looking for new porn will slowly fade away. You will become stronger. It will be less attractive to you. And before you know it, you’ll find that you’ve changed your life in a positive direction, slowly, over time, rather than crashing into failure, slowly, over time.
